Sadly, many Americans do not understand the meaning of Memorial Day. Many Americans have never visited the cemetery to place flowers on the graves of those who gave their lives in battle to defend this Country and her world-wide coveted freedoms. These people have never stood silently with their arms around the shoulders of the widow as she weeps. They have never searched through a cemetery for the graves of veterans in order to place a small American Flag by the headstone. No...for these Americans, Memorial Day is all about fun, food, shopping, and playing. To them this sacred holiday is but another day off.
Thankfully, many Americans still remember the meaning of Memorial Day and why we, as a nation, decided to set this day apart from the others. These Americans are deeply touched by the Ultimate Sacrifice of our soldiers. Some are family members of fallen soldiers and others were there when she or he died. Memorial Day is about remembering not forgetting, gratitude not gluttony, giving not getting, commemoration not celebration.
At Operation Outreach, we will respectfully remember the men and women who have died so that we may live as a free society. Our Salute is to our fallen brothers- and sisters-in-arms. May they ever rest in peace.
